Hand arthritis X-rays are read by pattern. Osteoarthritis often produces osteophytes and DIP or thumb base narrowing. Rheumatoid arthritis often favors MCP and PIP joints with erosions and soft-tissue swelling. Gout can create punched-out erosions and soft-tissue masses.
